About the Hestra Army Leather Extreme Mitt Black

The Hestra Army Leather Extreme mitt is engineered for the coldest days and most demanding conditions. Built with a proofed Army goat leather palm and Hestra Flextron 4-way stretch softshell, it combines durability with weather protection. The removable G-Loft insulation liner can be swapped or dried separately, letting you adapt to changing temperature or activity levels.

Why we rate it

This is maximum thermal protection: the insulation rating stands at 8/8, designed for expedition-level cold. The goat leather shows the wear beautifully and develops character over seasons. The removable Bemberg fleece lining (brushed polyester) dries quickly and compresses efficiently, so the mitt stays packable. The duckbill wrist design and handcuff keep snow and wind out of the cuff without bulk.

Mobility is deliberately restricted (1/8) because the priority here is protection for static or low-intensity activity—dog sledding, snowmobile touring, standing watch in extreme cold. The carabiner loop and included 50mm carabiner means you can clip them to a pack or jacket when you need brief hand mobility.

Who it's for

Skiers and mountaineers planning long, cold days at altitude or in severe winter conditions. Also favoured by outdoor professionals and adventurers who spend hours exposed. The roomy mitt cut suits average to slightly wider hands; the removable liner lets you fine-tune warmth without changing gloves.

Key features

  • Army goat leather palm — durable, proofed against moisture, develops character and grip with use
  • G-Loft synthetic insulation — expedition-weight, maintains warmth when damp, quick-drying and compressive
  • Removable Bemberg lining — brushed polyester fleece, can be swapped for thinner liner or washed separately
  • Duckbill wrist design — shaped for a secure fit over jacket cuff without constricting blood flow
  • Single-hand snow lock — adjustable gauntlet closure keeps snow out
  • Included carabiner — 50mm, lets you clip mitts to pack or harness when needed
  • Leather Balm — 10ml included for proofing and maintenance

Fit and feel

The mitt cuts generously through the palm and hand, suiting average to wider hands comfortably. The cuff sits high and wraps snugly with the adjustable closure; there's no pinch. The removable lining means you can layer underneath or swap it out mid-trip. The goat leather softens and moulds to your hand over the first season, improving grip and feel.
