Our boots are sized honestly: the size shown is what the boot actually fits, not the number moulded into the sole.

  • The number pressed into the sole is the size of the mould, not the finished boot with its liner in.
  • Between sizes, go up — the liner needs air around your foot to do its job, and a squeezed boot is a cold boot.
  • When the liner eventually tires, replace it rather than the boot, and the full rating comes back.

About the Skee-Tex Original Fishing Boot XXL

Built on seven decades of proven design, the Skee-Tex Original is a waterproof neoprene boot that works through passive heat reflection rather than bulk insulation. The aluminium liner bounces your own body warmth back where it matters, keeping your feet warm when you're sitting or standing still for hours in freezing conditions.

Why we rate it

The boot's principle is elegant and effective: reflective technology means you get genuine −50 °C protection without the weight or stiffness that thicker thermal materials bring. The thick chevron-lugged sole grips wet rocks and ice. It's been the choice of serious expedition workers and anglers for generations, including Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who has used them in eighteen years of polar work.

The dark olive neoprene upper stands up to hard use. When the liner eventually wears, you replace it — restoring the full thermal rating rather than buying new boots. That's both economical and practical for someone who depends on their feet.

Who it's for

Anyone who needs to stay warm while static in the cold: bank anglers, mountain workers, cold store staff, expeditions. It suits you if you value simplicity and proven performance over trendy features, and if you're prepared to size up slightly for the liner to work (a squeezed boot is a cold boot).

Key features

  • Aluminium heat-reflective liner — bounces your body heat back to your foot, rated to −50 °C
  • 100% waterproof neoprene upper — dark olive with black cuff trim and navy side panel
  • Deep chevron-lugged sole — pale cream rubber, grips ice and wet rock
  • Liner replaceable — when it tires, swap it out and restore the full thermal rating
  • Made in Essex — handmade at Skee-Tex in Battlesbridge since 1950
  • XXL size — fits UK 13–14

Fit and feel

The XXL is cut generously; between sizes, go up. The liner needs a small air gap around your foot to work, and a tight boot defeats the whole principle. The sole is substantial and slightly stiff underfoot until it flexes in. The neoprene upper is supple and forgiving.

From the fitting room: If you're buying for serious cold-weather work or expeditions, this is the only boot in the shop that comes with a proven −50 °C track record. The aluminium liner is the secret—nothing else at this weight does the job.
